Socrates is a 5 year old Purebred German Shepherd

April 7th 2009,
Socrates is HOME....

A note from Socrates new mom and dad and sister, Aurora....

Socrates is flourishing! In the past few months, his amputation has fully healed and his hair has grown back. It has been wonderful watching his personality come out more and more as he feels increasingly secure. He goes on short walks in the neighborhood, loves to ride in the car, and has become great friends with Aurora, our 11 year old female german shepherd. Their favorite thing to do is hang out with us in the yard and "talk" to people walking by the fence. Socrates is even running and playing in the yard! When he is running, you would not even know that he has lost a leg. As he has gotten stronger and more agile, he has been able to exercise and build up strength and he has also trimmed down to a very healthy weight (we're very conscious of that given his one back leg). He is truly the perfect gentleman - he has impeccable house manners and is the gentlest, sweetest dog on the planet. He loves to ride in the care and we take him with us often when we go places - he and Aurora sit together in the back seat (quite a sight with two german shepherds!). He does wonderfully with children and has admirers everywhere he goes. Socrates loves to be right beside us and will follow us around the house, pluncking down with a stuffed toy or a bone never more than a few feet away. I think his favorite place to hang out with us is in the middle of the kitchen when we're cooking - just in case something tasty drops! We love Socrates - he is a truly precious boy and it amazes me that his temperament is so gentle and solid given everything that he has been through...he is a one-of-a-kind boy for sure.

July 22, 2008:
Soc's Here....On June 24th I had my second surgery to repair my broken leg. It went very well...they put a pin in the bone to hold it in place and put lots of strong wire around the bone. With in two days I was bearing weight on my leg. I had an infection in my incision when I first arrived at the vets office which the vets where very concerned. They did not want it to get into my bone...so I had to hang out at the vets office for a good week. Finally I got to go home with my foster mom. Who had a nice soft area reserved for me so I could recover in comfort. Leash walks only. And I had to wear one of those E collars...YUK! On July 8th I had my staples removed and my incision is healing great! But I still have to wear the E collar because I keep licking at my incision causing it to open a little....oh well. My foster mom took my E collar off yesterday and I am still licking my incision so it is back to the E collar. Otherwise life is good in the air conditioning and I on all my wonderful dog beds donated by some great people. (Thank You) I go back on August 12th to x-ray my leg and see if the pin can be removed. If everything goes as planned I could be ready for adoption by the end of August! My foster mom said some wonderful people helped pay for my surgery, I thank you so much! And a special thanks to Dr. Isaac's at Blue Flint Animal Hospital in Asheboro who preformed my surgery and all the staff that took such good care of me while I was there. Life is Good! Love Socrates

June 26th, 2008 - He is absolutely beautiful and is an outstanding representative of his breed. He has a beautiful personality too! He is a 110 pound gentle giant. He has Certified Pedigree papers and is registered with the Continental Kennel Club. Socrates has fallen onto hard times through no fault of his own. Socrates lived the first 4 years of his life with a family including 4 children and 2 cats. He slept, on his back, in the bed with the children at night. The family went through hard times and needed to re-home Socrates. A kind lady took him in with the intent on finding him a good home. While he was living with her, he had a horrible accident...he was playing chase with a kitty and was given the command to stop chasing...well.....Socrates, being the obedient one that he is, was trying to stop and slid into an outside building and broke his leg in two places. He has had one surgery and now has been through another surgery to repair the damage done. Since the first surgery, Ruff Love Rescue has taken him into their rescue program and they will be responsible for the last surgery and his rehabilitation. Currently Socrates is at Blue Flint fighting an infection. We hope he will be able to come home on Monday 6/30. Start his recovery process which will take a minimum of six weeks. Then Socrates can start looking for a forever home.

We met Mr. Soc's Saturday 6/21 for the first time and we all where quite taken with him. You can look into his eyes and feel his intelligence, nobility and gentleness. He would be an excellent therapy dog! Socrates is going to make someone an excellent companion, but first we need to make him healthy again. Donations can be made directly to Blue Flint Animal Hospital, 1527 Zoo Parkway, Asheboro, NC 27205. Telephone number is 336-328-1000. Or you make tax deductible donation directly to Ruff Love by donating through their paypal account. PLEASE earmark your donations, for Socrates, whether you donate to Blue Flint or Ruff Love. Thank You so much on behalf of Socrates!!
