Linbrook Hall History

Located on a hill in view of America ’s oldest mountain range, the Uwharrie Mountains , Linbrook Hall is named in honor of Linda Stewart Neal by her husband, Jerry D. Neal, and for the brook that flows around the base of the hill.  The house is designed in the Early Classical Revival style found most prominently in the southern states beginning in approximately 1820.  The most famous proponent of Classical Revival Architecture was Thomas Jefferson.  Jefferson ’s influence on this style of architecture was so profound that it came to be known as “Jeffersonian Classicism”.  Linbrook Hall was designed by William Huey of Charleston , South Carolina using proportions developed by the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio.  Mr. Huey used Palladian proportions for critical design elements inside the house and out.  The fluted columns, which are a prominent feature of the house, include Scamozzi Capitals named for the 16th Century Italian architect Vincenzo Scamozzi.  Linbrook Hall has been a six-year project from design concept to completion and was designed to demonstrate the timeless beauty of classical architecture.

Located near the Neal’s great-great-grandfather’s property, this land has significance for the family of Linda and Jerry Neal.  The Neal ancestors have lived on this and adjacent property for well over 100 years.  The purpose of Linbrook Hall goes far beyond classical architecture and family heritage.  Linda and Jerry’s concept is to create a facility that can be used as a home with a larger purpose.  The home will be used to further the causes, which they believe deserve significant financial support.  The Neals have a passion for research to find cures for catastrophic children’s diseases and institutions that provide care and a better quality of life for chronically ill children.  The Neals hope Linbrook Hall will become a center to further the advancement of the causes they hold dear.

House Facts:

Linbrook Hall is among the largest private homes in the Southeast and contains more than 30,000 square feet of living space and over 60 rooms.  The house has a centrally located rotunda, which rises more than 60 feet above the main floor.  The one-mile entry drive contains many prominent stone features created by a master stonemason.  The house presents 14 fluted columns measuring 4 feet in diameter and 32 feet in height.  It contains many details found in 19th century homes, and includes antiques from around the world.
